June is around the corner and it’s wedding season again. As many couples embark upon their lives together, some are choosing to add a bit of surprise and delight to the celebration.
Instead of getting hitched in their hometowns, couples are flying to destinations far and wide, to give guests as well as themselves a thrill.
So what is a destination wedding exactly, according to Wedding Wire:
The answer to the question “what is a destination wedding?” might be this simple: A destination wedding is hosted in a location that’s special to the couple, that doesn’t include their hometowns or where they currently live. According to the WeddingWire survey, 53 percent of couples chose their wedding destination because it’s meaningful to them. And half of couples in the survey chose to have a destination wedding because it’s a unique experience. Whether it’s a favorite vacation spot, a beloved city, or a college town, millennial couples want every aspect of their wedding, from the location to the tiniest of details, to feel personal.
We were curious to discover just how popular this trend has become. The organization Group Travel has researched the phenomenon and shared the following statistics on their website:
- 1 out of every 4 wedding is a destination wedding.
- New York City weddings are the most expensive destination weddings by far. With hotel rates in the $300-$400 range, it is not surprising that the average wedding costs over $70,000.
- The top locations for destination weddings in the USA are Florida, California and Nevada.
- The top three locations for destination wedding outside the continental US are Caribbean, Mexico and Hawaii.
- 350,000 destination weddings take place annually.
- Las Vegas is the category leader for weddings with over 100,000 per year.
- The average number of guests at a destination wedding is 86. The average number of guests at a traditional wedding is 141.
