Aimee was kind enough to find time in her busy schedule to share with Oliversity thoughts on her career, definition of success and top beauty tip.
How did you become a writer?
I’ve always been really nosy, which made journalism a good fit for me and back in 2003, I was chasing a story that eventually became my first co-written book. It was one of the first looks at what was happening at Guantanamo and that led to a decade of writing other non-fiction books, most of them with a focus on human rights. I knew, though, that what I really wanted was to be a novelist so two years ago I gave it a try and somehow pulled it off and this past May, my debut novel was published. It’s called The Perfect Mother and it’s a psychological thriller about new motherhood (but don’t tell my daughters because I’ve successfully convinced them it’s a memoir.)
What inspires you the most in your work?
Playing with language, a really well-crafted sentence, other writers like Lauren Groff, Toni Morrison, Gillian Flynn, Alice Walker, Jillian Medoff, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Jesmyn Ward and also that I get to wear pajamas all day.
How do you define success for yourself?
Any day that I get my butt in that chair and get words on the paper is a success.
What do you do to stay healthy and in shape, what are your wellness habits?
With two young kids and a novel due in six months, my main form of exercise is pacing—although I’m usually able to also slip in three sets of jaw clenching in the morning, when the kids get home from school, and again at bedtime.
What is your typical daily skincare and beauty routine and how has it evolved over the years?
I’m a pasty Irish woman so I can get a sunburn in the middle ofa snowstorm which means my only hard and fast rule is that I always wear sunscreen.
