In the plant world, squalene is an extract of the unsaponifiable oils. In olive oil we find from 200 to 12000 mg per kg. In the human body, squalene is one of the most important constituents of sebum, an oily substance that keeps hydrated the most superficial layer of the epidermis by slowing the evaporation of water. The sebum also protects the skin from of various kinds detergents, chemicals, microorganisms, solar radiation, etc.
Since squalene is highly unsaturated and therefore very unstable in the presence of air, in cosmetics it is preferred to use its hydrogenated derivative:
SQUALANE or SQUALENE
The elimination of double bonds diminishes the susceptibility to oxidation and increases the shelf life of the product. The vegetable squalane on the skin effectively fights skin dehydration. It also strengthens the lipid barrier of the epidermis. Like human sebum, it gives skin its natural softness. It is an excellent natural emollient that penetrates very quickly, spreads easily, leaves no residue and does not stain the skin. Repairing and nourishing skin, it also helps the healing of tissues in skin irritation ensuring a silky and elastic appearance even in the most exposed areas.
Properties of the squalane:
– Anti dehydrating
– Emollient
– Protector
– Reparatory
