Feeling Hot! Hot! Hot! this summer? Use these five tips to help beat the heat!
Hydrate
Our bodies are made up of 70% water, therefore, it is extremely essential to hydrate! It is recommended to drink about 64 ounces of water, which is equivalent to about four water bottles. Drinking water is extremely crucial in the summer due to the heat. Hot weather makes our bodies sweat, which can cause dehydration. Dehydration makes us more susceptible to heat exhaustion as well as heat stroke. Keeping yourself hydrated with cold water throughout the day can prevent any health issues related to a lack of hydration.
Choose your food wisely
When you make the right, healthy food choices, you help your body feel cool. Selecting raw food options like salads, fruits, and vegetables (especially cucumbers), can keep you cool. Foods like meat and protein-heavy foods should be avoided in the middle of the day for they increase metabolic heat production, which can lead to a loss of water. Try to eat these types of foods in small portions, as smaller meals tend to keep your body temperature lower, as larger meals require your body to work harder.
Protect yourself from the sun
While summer fun requires you to go outside, stay out of the sun when the rays are at their strongest. Limit your sun exposure between 10am to 4pm, when possible. If you choose to be out during those hours, make sure you wear sunscreen! Sunburns are not only painful and embarrassing but can lead to fever or even dehydration. Use either SPF 15 or 30 if you plan on spending time outside. Make sure you reapply sunscreen about every two hours when outside especially if you are swimming or sweating.
Dress cool
What you wear can drastically impact your body temperature. By wearing lightweight, loose-fit clothing, you can guarantee that you keep cooler. Try to wear light colors like yellow or pink instead of darker colors for lighter colors can reflect the heat and sun better. Wearing a light-colored hat that covers your scalp and top of your ears will be able to provide you shade, being able to cool your body temperature. Lastly, make sure you choose function over style by wearing fewer accessories. Big accessories can heat up on your body and less is always best when it comes to cooling down. If you have long hair, make sure you wear it up off your face, for it allow the breeze to go to your neckline.
Rinse with cold water
If you are feeling extremely hot, try rinsing your wrists under cold water. Make sure you usE a citrus-based soap like Olivella’s Orange Bath and Shower Gel. The natural ingredients found in these products are useful to relax your skin and your body temperature. The cold water will help lower your body temperature, perfect for if you are about to go to sleep.
By using these five helpful tips, you can ensure that you will stay cool for the rest of the summer!
